[synopsis] => DAD. That's what I answer when someone asks what kind of story The Vox Oculis Trilogy is. DAD stands for "Defies All Description." That answer annoys many people, understandably as it is kind of a dodge on my part, but as most people are indulging and kind, they usually have the patience to ask a follow-up question, which is almost always, "Okay, well perhaps you can tell me what the genre is?" "That's easy. It is a CYACOAMTWATOSF&R novel," I reply. Now, If the person doesn't immediately turn and walk away in exasperation, they will likely pause, roll their eyes, and then politely admit that they aren't familiar with that genre and ask if I could explain it. I reply, "It stands for a 'contemporary young adult coming-of-age mystery-thriller with a touch of science fiction and romance.'" "Ah!" they will say, in relief, and then the sharper ones will crinkle their brow and point out, "That completely describes it, then, does it not? So how can you claim that it defies all description?" "Ah," I reply, "That, I cannot explain. You'll just have to read the books." If they are still with me after that, I finally reward them with a stab at a real description and tell them that The Vox Oculis Trilogy is a story that follows the life of a fourteen-year-old girl named Blue as she grapples with her tortured past and tries to navigate a seemingly endless series of unpredictable tragedies in pursuit of some semblance of stability and normalcy, without really knowing what that means. Having a genetic trait that seems to be unique to her and allows her to eavesdrop on people's thoughts definitely complicates this pursuit of normalcy. Just a bit. How she survives that journey and its stunning twists and turns makes this story less of a run-of-the-mill thriller and more like an intriguing testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of youth and the power of friendship and community. And, like real life, the pace of the story alternates between la-ti-da and OMG in a rhythm that will keep you on your toes while the final chapters wind things up in a wild thrill ride with a shocking surprise. Will the story defy my description or any description? That, my friend, I will leave for you to decide. -fm
